Shopping and designing........... from Exuberant Color

I had a gift certificate to use at a local garden center so I made a trip there yesterday.  I got Pansies for the pot on my porch.  I was disappointed that they didn't have any orange ones since they are the scented variety.

I also got a 4 pack of tiny tomato plants for $2.39.  I will plant them in the next size containers and keep them in my garage.  I'll might then move them up to another size container before they get planted outside.  It will depend on how fast they grow.  these are the ...

Just playing................... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was the first day this week without strong wind so I went grocery shopping and filled my gas tank.

When I got to the sewing machine I continued sewing triangle squares and then decided to play with some of the parts in the box.  If I decide to sew this block I need to start sewing more hourglass blocks.  I have a couple more ideas to try too.

This is one of the racks in the basement that I can see now that the excess design walls are gone.  On top is interfacing and fusible fleece, next shelf down ...

Sorting......mindless work........... from Exuberant Color

Last night I decided to sort the triangles in the box of 3" Kaffe collective fabrics.  Since I cut them with my die cutter, and there are either 6 layers or 10 layers, depending on which cutter I used, there was a variety of fabrics in each pile.

Then I decided to divide them by stacks with less than 8 triangles and stacks of more than 8 triangles.  This photo is all of the ones with 8 or more triangles.  A sawtooth star would take 8 alike.

Next I paired all of the ones with less than 8 triangles and ...

Very little sewing.................. from Exuberant Color

I couldn't settle on a project yesterday so I decided to just sew some more components for the 4" Kaffe "parts" box.  I need to press the strips before I can cut them to make 4 patches.

I decided to check the 3" Kaffe "parts" box and I need to cut more light fabrics before I do much sewing with the pieces.  I don't have anything in mind for either box of pieces and hopefully I can zero in on a project today.

I can always trim the two Tilda quilts and cut the binding for them.

Twig border.................. from Exuberant Color

The twig print border #4 was a good finish for this piece.  I started with the center block in July 2016.  Borders were added little by little over the years.  I wish now that the center was better looking.  I could unpick it and add something else in the center but I'll have to think about that for awhile.  It is 45.5" x 57.5" right now.  The overall size won't change if I decide on something else for the center.

I gave a final press to the other wild little quilt top.  It is 40" square ...

Surprise audition................ from Exuberant Color

This is not what I had in mind for the 4 patches I have been making, but I had to try them as a border for this second busy little quilt top.  They definitely work and maybe I just need to use them and scrap my idea for starting another quilt top.  I could add another row of 4 patches on the top and bottom to make it more rectangular.

The early Peonies are coming up.  There is ne group slightly behind the birdbath and another group to the right of it.  There is a patch of jonquils or daffodils ...

Sorting, stitching................ from Exuberant Color

I still had the bin of my parents' photos on the dining room table since the day my cousins visited.  I decided they weren't going to sort themselves so I spent 3 hours yesterday, making some progress.  Most are from my mother's side of the family.  I sorted into piles of 3 generations, my brothers and me, great aunts and uncles and their families, and one pile of "who is this?".  I will need to go back through some of the piles again but for now I can put them back into the bin with labels inserted into ...

Mindless sewing.................. from Exuberant Color

This is the view from my sewing chair at 9 p.m. last night.  I worked on the binding a little and earlier in the day cut some more batik pieces.  I needed a break from both projects so I gathered up all of the Kaffe collective 2.5" strips that weren't a full length and started sewing contrasting values together.  At this point I'm thinking 4 patches with one of two different ideas as their landing spot.

This is a better photo of all of the ones that are sewn so far.  I need to press them ...

Border...................... from Exuberant Color

A little over a week ago I showed some pieced strips I found in a drawer in my studio.  This photo shows what is left after using some of them.

I also showed 2 possible small tops in progress that the strips could be used on.  This was the winner and I got all 4 borders sewn on Wednesday night.

To break down this design: I started with 4 star blocks and then added sashing made of Flying Geese.  After that I added Bow Tie blocks as a border and then it stayed in limbo for 4 1/2 years ...

Blooms, weather, and hand stitching................ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday morning I noticed the second bud has opened on the double white Amaryllis.  I hoping the last 2 buds will open too.

There were several storms rolling through yesterday afternoon.  The second one brought hail.  It is pea size and lasted about 5 minutes.  There was heavy rain too, and we need the moisture in the ground.

There is a corner of 2 roof angles meeting in the back by the dining room window.  When the hail shoots off the roof it makes a pile on top of one of my Coral Bell plants but nothing has sent up ...

Yes, it did snow................ from Exuberant Color

This was the scene around 9:30 yesterday morning.  I think we had around an inch of snow when it was all done.  The good part is how fast it will melt today when it gets close to 50 this afternoon.  We may get a little snow Thursday morning too, the first day of spring.

The good news yesterday was the Amaryllis saved from several years ago is blooming.  I was happy to see it was a double white one.

A few days ago I thought it only had 2 buds but when it finally all opened up there are ...

New fabric................... from Exuberant Color

I usually preorder some of the new Kaffe collective fabrics in February and August.  There weren't many that I wanted but I thought this group would cut up nicely.  You can see here how they would look in a 2.5" strip.

I like Brandon's "gingham" which had some new colors offered.   I ordered 2 colors of one more print but there was a mistake on my order and one of them wasn't included.  It will be coming next week and then I'll show both of them.

I put the strip of Tilda's ladies on ...

How many strips are left?........... from Exuberant Color

My goal was to use up a lot of 2.5" and 1.5" full length (45") strips in the Kaffe Strippy quilt last month.  The 1.5" strips are in the box on the left and 2.5" on the right.  I removed all of the partial length strips from the boxes and will store them separately now.  I have used a lot of 2.5" strips in several quilts in the last year.  That box used to be packed full.

I'm going to keep both groups in one box now which frees up a storage box for ...

Binding chosen................. from Exuberant Color

When I saw my binding choices from yesterday in daylight I decided the rosy one was leaning toward purple.  I went through 2 stacks of batiks and came up with these two new choices.

This one was the winner.  I named this quilt shimmering fish and the setting triangles look like water ripples.  I decided this aqua and green batik would carry that feeling of water the best.

I got it sewn on and started the hand stitching.  Some of the setting triangles are blue but none of them made it into this photo.  I will spend the day today ...

Rows sewn, not pressed............... from Exuberant Color

All of the rows are sewn but I haven't finished trimming the right side.  I need to take it down to the basement to my big table for that.  After I press it, it will become clearer how the trimming needs to be done.

My other project is trying to find a binding fabric for this quilt.  Here you can see the backing fabric which has little shots of green in addition to the red and yellow.

I have a lot of pieces of batik that are between 1/4 and 1/2 yard so some of them are ...

Progress as I look at it........................ from Exuberant Color

The color is way off in this photo, but it is showing the progress from yesterday.

The top 8 rows are all sewn together, trimmed at the left edge but not on the right side.

Below that is 2 more rows sewn together.  The next row is at the sewing machine, and  the bottom 4 rows are waiting to be sewn.  I decided to just lay the bottom row on the floor instead of pinning it to the design wall.  I think this one will end up around 47" x 67" and I'm thinking about putting flannel on the ...

Playing with the design wall..................... from Exuberant Color

This is the view from my sewing chair while I'm watching TV last night.  I should have started this up a little higher because I have one more row to add on top or bottom.  I'll try to add one more row at the top today.  I actually have enough pieces left to add 2 rows so the other one would have to be pinned onto the wall at the bottom.

The largest sections are approximately 5" x 12" now.  The half sections are 5" x 6".  I can unpick the excess at the beginnings and endings of ...

Trial layout............ from Exuberant Color

Finally I got the strip pieced blocks cut into 5" strips, 2 each from most of the blocks, just one from a few of them.  I pressed all of my seams open so I didn't want to have to match seams. By offsetting the strips with the narrow strip meeting the wider strip of the ones above and below it, I shouldn't have any problem sewing it together.  I did just enough of a trial layout to see if it is going to work and now I'll plan the layout of the colors.

I had 4 Amaryllis ...

A finish! Yay!........................ from Exuberant Color

My green Rosy quilt (a Kaffe design) is finished.  I just love this quilt.  What's not to love about green; it goes with everything.  Nature shows us lots of green and it goes with every color of flowers.

I have it photographed upside down to the way I designed it so a couple of one way designs are upside down here, but I'm short, and this quilt is taller than me, so I didn't want to unpin it and turn it around.

If I had flipped the photo above, then it wouldn't match this photo that ...

All cut............ from Exuberant Color

I finished pressing and cutting the rest of the fabrics for the last two shapes for the Tilda Whimsey quilt.  I have also cut strips for a 16 patch and one other quilt.

I spread out the fabric for each group and also added 4 fabrics at the bottom right that I can add if I need more contrast in one of the shapes.  I might not start sewing these into blocks until Saturday.

I worked on the hand sewing of the binding on this green Kaffe Rosy quilt last night.  I have about 3/4 of one short side ...
